The first step to surviving office politics is to admit that they exist, this will lessen the pain as a colleague that seemly swans through the day with minimum effort but still lands all the plaudits.
The next step is having your ear to the ground and understanding how the company ticks as Sir Francis Bacon said “Knowledge is power”. So knowing where and when to make your move is essential to gaining a foothold on the ladder to promotion. As with all Hollywood blockbusters the good guys always win, with this in mind it is important to be the good guy/girl of the office the one seen as a safe pair of hands, the one that gets consulted when a decision is being made even though you had no real input into the process. If you can become that person many doors become unlocked. And most importantly learn to market yourself, promote your accomplishments in a subtle way that when a discussion takes place your achievements are mentioned, big or small.
